Doctors do not know everything really. They understand matter, not spirit. And you and I live in the spirit. ~ William Saroyan
Divine Healing. A blessing beyond measure! And a challenge in today's medically-focused culture (how many TV ads do you see on diseases and drugs?). So, how do you get from Biblical promise to physical reality?
I explained the process of finding God's answers to life's problems in last week's article, How to Deal with Difficult Questions . It's basically simple: know God's Word, accept it as your own Truth, and do not let the devil steal your faith. You must know , like faithful Abraham, that what God promised, He is also able to perform (Rom. 4:21).
You remember Abraham's story. He and Sarah had never had children. She was barren; he was almost 100 years old. God led him away from his relatives & friends (maybe so they would not short-circuit his faith or tell him “you can not, you'll never …”). He prospered Abram inadmissiblely, but … so far, no kids.
Yet God had promised him that he would become a Father of many nations. God even changed Abram's name to Abraham so that Abram would start to speak of himself as “Father of Many Nations”. With no children?
Now, in Abraham's case, it took years for Sarah to finally conceive and bear a child. Lots of time for doubt, unbelief and frustration to steal the blessing God promised. But Abraham stayed with it. When he surprised, he looked at the sky and count the stars, remembering God's promise. When he doubted, he looked at the shore, imagining the grains of sand as future generations. Abraham told his ancient body and Sarah's barren one, “I do not believe you, I believe God.”
Simple, not Easy
It sounds simple, does not it? But I do have to admit, it is not easy. If it was, everyone would be completely healed, prosperous, whole, well and blessed beyond measure! So why are not we? Because we would rather take a pill, trust a diagnosis, or fill our time with things other than the Word. You can not undo the devil's grasp on the world (or your part of it) with a few trite confessions. Faith comes by HEARING; in other words, study, meditation, time spent with God.
Here's a simple truth. You can not have a deep relationship with God if you will not spend time with Him. Can you trust an acquaintance as deeply as you do a treasured friend? Would you expect the same level of commitment from a neighbor that you do your spouse or loved one? Relationships and trust (faith) take time and effort.
In my case, I've spent years studying God's Word, listening to trusted teachers and absorbing the stunning fact that God loves me (and YOU!) And wants to give us everything we need for a joyful life. It's the very reason why Jesus came to earth.
He never told anyone that they could not be healed or delivered. As a matter of fact, the Bible states in numerous placed that healed them all! He also said, I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly, to the full, until it overflows! (John 10:10 AMP).
Where's Your Faith?
Today, I'm trying to build your faith. You need to understand that whatever you need is available to you. With God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God will be without power or impossible of fulfillment (Luke 1:37 AMP). But, do you know that is true? Or is there some doubt in your mind that
- maybe not this time …
- maybe not for me …
- maybe I have not been good enough …
- maybe I'm asking too much …
- maybe I've done too many things that I'm fired of …
- maybe God just is not ready for me to receive …
That last word in the key to God's bounty. Receive. Not beg. Not hope. Not wonder.
Did you ever try to give anyone something that they would not take? “Oh, no. I do not need that,” they might say. Or, “I could not. It's too much.” Or some other variation of denial. Not only are they condemning themselves the blessing you are trying to share, they are condemning you the pleasure of doing or giving it. Yet, we do that with God all the time.
- I do not need much God. (Did you ever think to ask for abundance so you could give away what you do not need?)
- If You just give me this, I'll never ask for another thing. (Right! We both believe that, do not we?)
- I do not want to bother God with my problems. He got bigger things to deal with. (As a parent, what problem of your child's would you consider so insignificant that you would not want them to ask you for help?)
Where's Your Relationship?
So, we've established that you need FAITH – the kind that comes from studying His promises and trusting that His Word is Truth. Truth will change the facts of your present situation if you believe it will change .
Let me ask you another question. As a parent, how do you feel when you tell your teenagers something – and they roll their eyes and say, “yeah, right!” They do not believe you. They do not trust that you know more than they do. And they sure do not believe that you want what's best for them. They just think you're trying to be mean, to keep them from having fun or getting what they want.
So, how do you think God feels when you will not trust Him with your problems, pains and predicaments? How must it feel to know that His children believe the doctor or banker or neighbor more than Him?
Have you spent enough time with Him to know that He wants to bless you? Consider these promises.
- My cup runneth over . Surely kindness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life …
- Fear not, little flock, for it is your father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
- The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.
- They shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and all the prosperity that I have provided.
- He preserves all who love Him.
- The Lord will take away all your sickness.
- For I will restore health to you and heal you of all your wounds.
There are hundreds of Biblical reminders of God's goodness and mercy, His desire to see His children healed and whole and well. Beloved, I wish [pray] above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers (III John 2) . Does that sound like a God who wants you ill, broke and miserable?
Stay in School
Why do you think it takes 12 grades to graduate from school? Then 2, 4, 6, 8 or more to get additional education, skill and training? Learning is progressive. Each day, each class, each revelation expends your thinking and your understanding.
God's Word is no different. The more time you spend with His Word, the greater your faith, wisdom and understanding.
Consider this lesson in Faith. John 1: 1 tells us that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Later in that chapter, John explains that the Word became one of us in the person of Jesus (v. 14). Well, the Bible is also 'The Word'. Time spent studying and learning about The Word is time spent with Jesus. He's the ultimate Teacher.
Avoid the Devil's Deception
Why do we blame God for every bad thing? We call disasters 'acts of God'. We say “God took him” when there's been a death. Our idea of God too often is a God of punishment and denial. Yet the Bible clearly tells us in the first part of John 10:10, that it's the devil who comes to steal, kill and destroy. So if anything is broken, missing or out of kilter in your life, do not blame God. Whatever negative or evil you may face, do not allow yourself to believe that God may have caused it.
As you study to know and understand how much God loves you and how much He wants to give you, your faith with grow until it overflows from your spirit. It consumes your mind and comes out of your mouth as faith-filled words. That's the point where you've made a divine connection. You've plugged in to God's power.
- Know God's Word
- Accept it as your own Truth
- Speak and act only in faith, in agreement with The Word
- Do not let the devil steal your promise or your power
- Use thanksgiving and praise to reinforce your faith
Divine health is yours. (So are prosperity, peace, joy, or anything you need for an abundant life as God's child.) If you will take the time necessary to receive the abundance and blessing God has already planned and provided for you.
Faith tells the devil, the doctor, the disease, the doubt and the fear, “I do not believe you, I believe God.” Take His Word like medicine for your spirit and be healed!
